The KEMET Manifesto

“Books are the start, but short films, comics, audiobooks, children's books, video games and merchandising will be derived from each franchise.

KEMET: Welcome to Social Cinema

KEMET is a collaborative tapestry of narratives, a kaleidoscope of stories that reflect the diverse experiences and cultures of Africa, but also the rest of the world. Our storytelling, filmmaking and visual practices are rooted in authenticity, creativity, and a deep respect for the stories we tell.

Being the heart of our stories, we strive to portray our characters in a way that showcases their values and histories, while also taking our own creative liberties. As such, challenging stereotypes and promoting true representation will be paramount.

A Human Experience

KEMET begins with black culture. As a team of black creatives, we are passionate about telling stories that reflect our experiences and celebrate our heritage. However, we recognize that we are all part of the same human experience, and our stories will not be bound by race. Our love for the craft of storytelling will take center stage. The war of ideas starts and ends with the mind.

“Intellectual Property (IP) plays a crucial role in the creation and management of a cinematic universe like KEMET.

The Anthologies

The Anthologies will act as tendrils and provide an opportunity for experimentation, for pushing the boundaries of conventional storytelling. They are a playground for imagination, a space where writers and creators can explore new ideas, genres, and narrative structures. From the depths of science fiction to the heights of fantasy, from the complexities of human drama to the simplicity of everyday life, the Anthologies encompass a vast spectrum of narratives.

While each story stands on its own (or could connect to another anthology depending on what works), they all share an honest commitment to compelling, diverse, and inclusive storytelling. The Anthologies are not just a collection of stories; they are a testament to the power of narrative diversity and a celebration of storytelling in all its forms.

The creators working with KEMET will also need to be mindful of the IP rights of others.”
